Pier 40
South Beach Harbor
Townsend and the Embarcadero, next to Oracle Park.
Not Pier 39
Fisherman’s Wharf
A mile and a half north, and the most common mistake people make.
Before you come
- Arrive 30 minutes early. Boarding takes longer than people expect, and boats leave on time.
- Dress in layers. The Bay runs ten to fifteen degrees colder than the city, and the afternoon wind is real. Bring more than you think.
- Soft-soled shoes. Deck shoes or trainers. No heels, no black soles.
- Check the Giants schedule. Home games make the whole neighborhood congested, with heavy traffic in the hour before and after, unexpectedly clear during the game itself.
Driving
- From the East Bay
- Take the Bay Bridge into San Francisco. Stay right and take the first SF exit, Folsom/Embarcadero. Left at Folsom, follow to the Embarcadero, turn right. Head about half a mile south to Pier 40, then left on Townsend onto the pier.
- From the Peninsula
- US-101 north. About a mile past Candlestick, take the 280 North / Port of San Francisco exit. Follow 280 to the last off-ramp, King Street. King becomes the Embarcadero. Half a mile up to Pier 40, at Townsend and the Embarcadero.
- From San Francisco
- Take the Embarcadero south along the waterfront. South Beach Harbor is at Townsend and the Embarcadero on Pier 40, half a mile south of the Bay Bridge.
- From Marin
- US-101 south across the Golden Gate. Take the Marina exit, follow the waterfront to Bay Road, turn left. East on Bay to the end, right on the Embarcadero. South past the Bay Bridge to Pier 40.
Public transit
- From the East Bay
- BART to Embarcadero, the first San Francisco station. Transfer to any MUNI train toward Mission Bay or Caltrain, two stops to Brannan Street.
- From the Peninsula
- Caltrain to the last station, Fourth & King. Walk up King or Townsend to Pier 40, or take a MUNI train two stops to Brannan.
- Within San Francisco
- Any underground MUNI train toward Mission Bay, exit at Brannan. The 30, 15 or 45 lines stop near Caltrain, a short walk away. The 10-Townsend stops at 2nd & Townsend, a block from the harbor.
- From Marin
- Golden Gate Transit, ferry or bus, into San Francisco, then follow the directions above.
Parking
There is no parking on Pier 40 itself. Those are one-hour permit spaces and you will be towed. There are numerous lots within a five minute walk: several indoor lots on Townsend between 2nd and 3rd, a large lot at Main and Bryant, and smart meters along the Embarcadero that take cards. Depending on the Giants schedule, parking runs anywhere from well under a dollar to about $4.50 an hour. Townsend Street sometimes has free spaces, if you are lucky and early.
